A2Z Home Inspections Interview

Name of your website?

A2Z Home Inspections

Your name?

Chris Duphily

Your Location (city, etc)

Dingmans Ferry PA in the heart of the Pocono Mountains

Why did you start your website?

To open my marketing directly to the public instead of relying on real estate agents. I'm there for the buyer not the agent...

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes, currently I am running a promotion in which a client can win anywhere from $20-$50 off an inspection, free chemical/bacteria water analysis or even a home inspection - completely free! A $400 value! Just one way I like to thank a client for trusting me with the largest investment of their life. I also provide a complimentary copy of "Manual for a Happy Home", a 72 page comprehensive guide which has all the answers and is a must for every Pennsylvania homeowner.

What is your travel charge?

ZERO! I never charge extra to travel to serve our customers. Why should they pay extra because their dream home is more than 20 miles from my office? My own house is over 20 miles from my office!

I also provide Free Lifetime phone consultations. I have had past clients call me for advice on everything from remodeling to my recommendation for a nice restaurant to a good physical therapist!

What are your prices?

Currently (July 2007)my Comprehensive Inspection is $400. My Basic Inspection is $300 and an Investors Walk-through Inspection is $99.00.

Why the different prices; and what is the difference between the 3?

Everyone has different needs, some want just the basics: Roof, Foundation, Mechanicals, Electrical and Plumbing, hence my Basic Inspection. While others want to know about every aspect of the visible areas of the home. That is why my Comprehensive Inspection includes everything listed in my Basic Inspection plus: carbon monoxide analysis, potable water analysis (full chemical and bacteria), septic inspection and wood destroying organism inspection. Radon testing is a separate charge ($99.00). Radon requires a return trip, but the benefit of my radon testing is the fact that I use a continuous radon monitor (CRM). I have the ability to give you accurate results (within 1%) as opposed to using charcoal canisters and having to wait an additional 2-5 days for the results, which can be +/- 25% of the actual level! That's a big difference when the US EPA sets a tolerance at 4 pci/l .... 25% can be the difference between passing and failing. Every home is inspected as if my own daughter was buying it, and by using a CRM, I know for a fact that the results are as accurate as possible.

Who maintains your website and why?

My wife designed and maintains my website. She is a specialist in her field and having her maintain the site allows me to keep my prices low. Low overhead = lower prices for the consumer without compromising quality!

How did you come up with your slogan?

"Your Peace of Mind is Our Business", It is a true statement if you stop to think about it. I brought it into my business from my personal ethics. As I said earlier "I inspect every home as if my daughter was buying it". I demand the highest level of service ... how can I not provide the same to my customers. It's one of the things my mother instilled in me, "practice what you preach". I know my customers appreciate that, just from the referrals I have received from them.

Why don't you want to rely on real estate agents?

Most real estate agents care about their clients... but there are quite a few (that I have dealt with) that do not care about the client, never mind about the condition of the home. They just want their commission. Like I said MOST are reputable and have a high ethical standard, but there are still many that will blame the inspector when a major or even a minor defect is uncovered. Some agents and inspectors unfortunately will cover up potential problems found in a property. The inspectors that don't cover up or avoid deficiencies do NOT get work from that agent again. These agents and inspectors are a dying breed but enough of them still exist to inhibit honest, integrity driven inspectors.

Why choose A2Z over another inspection company?

I have over 20 years of Industry experience including: residential and commercial framing, foundations and heating, air conditioning and refrigeration contracting I am a full member in good standing of the National Association of Certified Home Inspectors(NACHI),the National Home Inspection Training Institute (NHITI), Penn State continuing Education graduate, I belong to the US Chamber of Commerce, I have a clean Better Business Bureau rating, as a member of NACHI I am required to attend 24 hours of continuing education a year... I attend upwards of 80 hours each and every year to stay at the forefront of an ever changing industry. Quite simply I care about my clients, and that is expressed every time I am trusted to inspect their potential new home. I pride myself on my knowledge, my professionalism and my integrity ... at the end of every inspection, a satisfied client is my greatest reward.
